Applied Food Sciences Issued Patent
for Producing Black Tea Rich in Theaflavins
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 28, 2003--Applied Food Sciences,
Inc. (AFS™) is pleased to announce it is the exclusive licensee
of U.S. Patent No. 6,602,527 issued on Aug. 5, 2003. The patent
covers a novel process that converts fresh tea leaves, or green
tea, into a healthier, antioxidant rich black tea. The result is
black tea that is rich in theaflavin antioxidants, which can then
be brewed into a beverage or used to produce a potent theaflavin
extract.
"Theaflavins have a vast amount of scientific support providing
evidence of their health benefits in regards to cholesterol reduction,
skin damage protection, and antioxidant capacity to name a few," stated
Loretta Zapp, AFS' CEO. "The issuance of AFS' newest patent
provides us with the ability to produce a proprietary, enriched
theaflavin extract for the nutritional supplement industry. Traditional
beverage manufacturers may also benefit from the technology by
producing a 100% pure tea that contains the same amount of theaflavins
per serving as many of the current theaflavin-based nutritional
supplements on the market."
Drs. Thomas J. Slaga and Jifu Zhao of AMC Cancer Research Center
in Denver were the inventors of the process, and AFS is the exclusive
licensee of the patent. More information on the patent can be
found at www.uspto.gov.
