Applied Food Sciences' Green Coffee Antioxidant Effective in Reducing Carbohydrate Absorption

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 2003--Applied Food Sciences, Inc. (AFS(TM)) announced that its Green Coffee Antioxidant (GCA(TM)) product derived from raw green coffee beans contains greater than 50 percent pure chlorogenic acid. Research indicates that chlorogenic acid inhibits a critical enzyme involved in simple and complex carbohydrate metabolism without causing any gastrointestinal discomfort.

"Since we launched GCA, there has been an enormous amount of positive response from the market," stated Sean Traci, president of AFS. "There is a strong demand for reducing carbohydrate and calorie absorption without stimulants or causing gastrointestinal discomfort, and GCA is the answer."

Chris Fields, AFS technical director, added, "We realize that glucose management is an important part of overall health and nutrition. Numerous scientific studies suggest that chlorogenic acid could be a tool in the fight against obesity and Type II Diabetes. Physiologically, chlorogenic acid is extensively metabolized and absorbed within the digestive system, allowing it to provide significant health benefits to not only the plasma but other vital organs, such as the liver, kidneys and colon."

Chlorogenic acid's activity is supported by multiple in vitro scientific studies, both human and animal. In addition to chlorogenic acid, the antioxidants found in coffee have been linked to lowering LDL cholesterol oxidation and possessing superior antioxidant activity. Additionally, a recently published paper describes chlorogenic acid's potential role in the management of diabetes. This study evaluated coffee consumption and the risk of Type II Diabetes mellitus in a relatively large Dutch population. Coffee happens to be one of the primary sources of chlorogenic acid in the diet of this population. Higher coffee consumption was associated with a much lower risk of Type II Diabetes, even after adjustments were made for potential cofounders. (Van Dam, et al., 2002 The Lancet 360:1477-78).
